Auto Body & Collision Repair Marketing
Nobody plans to need you. By the time they do, someone has usually already told them where to go.
Collision is the rare local trade where advertising is not the main channel. Getting this right starts with knowing how much of your work is genuinely searched for and how much is steered.
Book a Strategy CallFor shops balancing insurance work, private pay, and the relationships that feed both.
Most of your work is referred before it is ever searched
A collision customer is rattled, often without a car, and moving fast. Within an hour they have usually spoken to an insurer, an adjuster, a tow operator or a dealership, and at least one of them has suggested a shop.
That is the competition you are actually in. It is not a search results page, it is a referral conversation happening while the customer is still on the phone with their carrier. Most shops we meet have never measured what share of their estimates come from each of those sources.
Search still matters, and it matters most for the customer who wants to choose for themselves — the private-pay repair, the second opinion, and the driver who does not realise they are allowed to pick their own shop. That last group is larger than most owners expect, and it is the group your marketing can genuinely win.
What that changes about the work
Source mix before spend – until you know what share of estimates come from insurers, tows, dealers and direct search, any advertising budget is a guess dressed up as a strategy.
Right-to-choose is your best message – many drivers do not know they can decline the recommended shop. Explaining that clearly converts better than any offer, and no competitor can copy it without sounding defensive.
Reviews are about the process – customers rarely judge your blend work. They judge whether anyone told them what was happening. Review content follows communication, not craftsmanship.
Estimates are the real conversion – a phone call is not the finish line. The number that matters is how many estimates become authorised repairs, and that is usually where the money is lost.
Why generic collision marketing underperforms
Most of it is lifted from home services, where the customer chooses freely and the buying journey starts with a search. Collision does not work that way.
These are the patterns we most often find running when a shop tells us their marketing is not producing.
paid search aimed at a shaken driver who has already been steered elsewhere, with no message about their right to choose.
the tow operators, agents and dealers sending real work get no attention, while budget goes to strangers who were never going to call.
no explanation of what happens after drop-off, no status updates, no answer to the only question the customer has: when do I get my car back.
call volume looks healthy while the estimate-to-repair capture rate quietly sits below where it should, and nobody is watching it.
How we think about it
The first thing we do for a collision shop is not marketing. It is a source audit: for the last ninety days of estimates, where did each one actually come from. Almost every shop is surprised by the answer, and the answer decides the plan.
If the majority of your work arrives referred, the highest-return work is usually strengthening and protecting those relationships, plus fixing the parts of your process that cause referrers to hesitate. That is unglamorous, it is not a media buy, and it is frequently worth more than any ad account we could build you.
The out-of-the-box move here is often operational rather than promotional. We have seen a shop gain more repairs from a two-line status-update text sent on day two than from doubling ad spend, because the referrer stopped fielding angry calls and started sending more work.
Questions we ask before proposing anything
Where did the last hundred estimates come from – insurer, tow, dealer, repeat, referral or genuine search. This single breakdown reorders the whole plan.
What is your capture rate – estimates written versus repairs authorised. If it is low, more estimates will not help until we understand why people walk.
How full is the shop – cycle time and bay capacity set a hard ceiling. Driving volume into a shop already running long only damages the reviews you depend on.
What mix do you want – insurance work keeps the bays full, private pay usually pays better. The right answer differs by shop and it changes what we build.
We work alongside your team, not around it
Your estimator and your front desk know why customers hesitate, which carriers are difficult, and which referrers have gone quiet. That knowledge is the strategy. Our job is to turn it into a system and put numbers against it.
We share the working, not just the outcome, so your team can read the reporting without us in the room and challenge us when something looks wrong.
Your front desk shapes the plan
we sit with the people taking the calls before we write anything, because they already know the three objections that cost you repairs. Agencies that skip this step end up marketing a shop that does not exist.
You keep the relationships
referral work we help you build belongs to you and your team, not to a campaign we run. If we step away, the sources keep sending work because the relationship was never ours.
We tell you when it is not marketing
if the constraint is cycle time, parts delays or communication, we will say so plainly rather than sell you advertising that makes a bottleneck worse.
What the work usually looks like
The order below is typical, not fixed. We stop wherever the numbers say the next step is not yet worth it.
Audit where the work comes from
ninety days of estimates broken down by source, so spend can follow reality instead of assumption.
Make the right to choose obvious
clear, calm content explaining that drivers can select their own shop, built to be found at the moment that question gets asked.
Fix the post-drop-off experience
status updates, expected timelines and a straight answer on the car. This is the single biggest driver of reviews and repeat referrals.
Own local search for your towns
Google Business Profile, photos of real work, categories and service areas aimed at the towns you genuinely draw from.
Build the review engine around communication
requests timed to collection, when the relief is real, handled by your team so it keeps running without us.
Measure capture, not calls
tracking wired through to estimates written and repairs authorised, split by source, so you can see which relationships actually pay.
What we report on
Estimates and authorised repairs, split by where they came from.
Rankings and impressions are diagnostics. If a report cannot tell you which sources produced repairs this month, it is not telling you anything you can act on.
insurer, tow, dealer, repeat and direct search counted separately rather than lumped into one total.
the share of estimates that become authorised repairs, tracked over time so you can see the effect of process changes.
how much of the work is coming in outside insurance steering, which is usually the most profitable growth available.
not just the star average, but what customers keep mentioning, because that is the thing referrers hear about.
What this usually involves
Which of these you actually need depends on what your numbers say. We would rather start with the one that moves first.
Questions, answered
Is search advertising even worth it for a collision shop?
Sometimes, and sometimes not. If most of your work arrives referred, ad spend is competing for a small slice of genuinely free choice. We measure the source mix first and tell you honestly whether paid search deserves budget in your case. For several shops the answer has been to spend less on ads and more on the referral and communication side.
Can you help us get more private-pay work?
That is usually the most valuable thing we can do. It means being findable and credible for people actively choosing a shop, making the right-to-choose point clearly, and showing real repair work rather than stock photography. It is slower than insurance volume and it generally pays better.
How much does the Google Business Profile matter?
A great deal, because the drivers who are choosing for themselves almost always look there first. Photos of genuine repairs, current hours, correct services and a steady flow of recent reviews do more for a collision shop than most owners expect.
We are already at capacity. What then?
Then more volume is the wrong goal. The useful work is shifting the mix toward better-paying jobs, improving cycle time, and protecting the reviews that keep the good sources sending work. We would rather tell you that than sell you demand you cannot service.
Do you work with shops on insurer programmes?
Yes. Programme work and direct work are not mutually exclusive, but they need to be measured separately because they behave and pay differently. Seeing them split out is often the first time an owner can judge the trade clearly.
Who owns the accounts and data?
You do. Profile, website, ad accounts, analytics and call records stay in your name. If we part ways we hand over access rather than hold it.
Start with where your estimates actually come from
Bring us ninety days of estimates and we will show you the source mix before we recommend a single line of spend. If advertising is not your best next move, that is what we will tell you.
