Overview
Ever wonder what it takes to market a massive event in real-time? Here's your backstage pass.
When Just Because Media took the reins of the Durham Fair's digital presence, our goal wasn't just to post updates — we wanted to shake things up and create an undeniable digital movement. We set out to translate the vibrant energy of a beloved local tradition into scroll-stopping social media content.
A beloved tradition that lived almost entirely offline.
The Durham Fair does not have an awareness problem locally — it has generations of it. What it had was a scheduling problem: a year of anticipation compressed into one weekend, and a digital presence that treated social media as a noticeboard rather than a reason to come.
Announcements tell people an event is happening. They do not make anyone feel like they are missing something. With a fixed date and a finite window to sell it, that gap is the whole job.
What we came in and built
We ditched the cookie-cutter corporate approach and brought the full fair experience straight to the audience’s screens — shooting on the ground, in real time, for sixty days. Four pillars carried it.
01 — Sensory immersion
From the roar of the carnival rides to the sizzle of fried Oreos, we captured every flavor and thrill in real time. We didn’t just post content; we made people feel like they were already there.
02 — Unfiltered authenticity
We grabbed backstage interviews and front-row action, ensuring every post radiated raw Durham Fair energy — the version a neighbour would film, not the version a committee would approve.
03 — Elevated perspectives
We took to the skies with striking drone footage. A bird’s-eye view of the sprawling fairgrounds turned casual scrolling into serious FOMO: “I need to be there.”
04 — Embracing the elements
When the skies opened up, the content didn’t stop. Instead of running for cover we captured the rain-soaked joy of ponchos and puddles — which produced some of the most engaging content of the run.
The Results
In just 60 days, the content turned online buzz into real-world foot traffic.

| Historic turnout | Buzz that came within inches of breaking the fair’s all-time attendance record. |
We didn’t market a weekend. We built the audience that shows up to it.
With the right mix of strategic content and relentless real-time storytelling, a local tradition becomes a digital presence that outlasts the weekend it was built for. The followers gained do not disappear when the rides are packed away — they are the starting line for next year.
