The Algorithm Trap
Every marketer knows the feeling: you've cracked the code. Your posts are getting reach, your engagement rate is up, and then — without warning — the platform changes everything. Your reach craters. Everything you built evaporates overnight.
This is the algorithm trap. And the brands that fall hardest into it are the ones that built their entire strategy around chasing algorithmic favor rather than building genuine audience relationships.
What Happens When You Chase the Algorithm
Algorithm-chasing behavior looks different depending on the platform, but the pattern is the same:
- Creating content formats that are "working right now" regardless of whether they fit your brand voice
- Posting at algorithm-optimized times rather than when your audience is in the right mindset
- Prioritizing engagement bait (controversial opinions, trend-jacking) over substantive value
- Burning your team out producing high volume over high quality
The Case for Ignoring the Algorithm
The brands with the most durable market positions aren't the ones with the most viral content. They're the ones with genuine brand loyalty — audiences that seek them out, share their work unprompted, and buy because they trust the brand, not because an algorithm served them a post.
Building that kind of brand requires:
- Consistent voice: Saying the same thing in the same way across every channel, regardless of format trends.
- Clear values: Standing for something specific that attracts a specific audience.
- Patience: Algorithm-independent brand building is slower. It's also more defensible.
- Owned channels: Email lists, SMS, and your own website can't be taken away by a platform update.
Finding the Balance
This isn't an argument to ignore digital distribution entirely — it's an argument to not let algorithms dictate your brand strategy. Use the platforms, understand how they work, but don't let algorithmic optimization override the brand decisions that create lasting competitive advantage.
